INFO-A-GO-GO

Let’s be honest, how many times have you thought, “Oh, I had no idea there was a club or organization like this in the desert?” It has definitely happened to us here @ The Center. So why not have an event that features all the great groups, clubs, organizations, and things that the Coachella Valley has to offer in one spot? Drumroll please… It is time again for INFO-A-GO-GO!
 
The Center’s 5th Annual INFO-A-GO-GO will take place on Friday, January 28 from 3 PM - 6 PM at the Compass Rose Ballroom at Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs, and it’s a one stop shop for all things LGBTQ+ in the desert. A sort of Welcome Wagon for our snow-birds, new residents, retirees, as well as folks that have been here awhile, so that you can see all that our amazing community has to offer to get plugged-in and involved. So please mark your calendars and help us spread the word!

Director of Communications

Position Title:                                 Director of Communications

Reports to:                                     Executive Director/CEO

Classification:                                 Full-time/Exempt

Term:                                               Ongoing

Compensation:                              $65K dependent on experience + comprehensive benefit program

Recruitment Date:                        November 1, 2021 until filled

 

 

Position Summary:

The Director of Communications will be a member of The Center’s senior leadership team and be responsible for all aspects of The Center’s strategic and day-to-day communications efforts. The director will develop and implement an org-wide strategic communications plan containing measurable goals and objectives, and oversee The Center’s brand and key messages across all communications channels including website, social media, press, content development, e-blasts, development and program campaigns.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead a comprehensive communications and marketing plan, including measurable goals and objectives based on a comprehensive analysis of Center offerings, resources, financials, internal and external stakeholders, and the results of our branding and digital enhancement initiative. 
  • Develop and maintain a marketing-communications calendar, coordinate communications functions and sources within The Center, and lead special projects, as applicable.
  • In collaboration with a consulting firm and key stakeholders, lead the ongoing implementation of new digital assets, messaging toolkit and other elements across all organizational communications.
  • Develop comms-related internal policy, protocol and procedural guidelines.
  • Provide oversight, guidance and leadership for the Digital Content Manager.  
  • Oversee and coordinate all communications outputs including digital media (web, email, social media, video previews), direct mail, onsite communications (signage, multimedia), advertising (print, radio, TV, online), etc.
  • Create a regular schedule to coordinate with and assist relevant internal departments on marketing-related matters to create necessary outputs and maximize results.
  • Establish media protocols and train board, staff and volunteers as necessary.
  • Plan and execute press outreach and campaigns including releases, strategic media placement and press conferences as needed. Prep ED/CEO and other leadership staff as needed. Manage all media relations to positive effect.  
  • In collaboration with other departments, increase Center-produced event visibility, strengthen attendance and participation in pre-identified programs and services, and increase Center membership program through targeted outreach. 
  • Develop a crisis communications plan; manage all breaking news situations.
  • Assess and continually transform website and web channels to achieve specific outcomes and maximize effectiveness.
  • Apply strong decision-making, creative-thinking, and problem-solving skills to successfully promote The Center’s mission, services, programs and events. 
  • Recruit, train, and schedule marketing and communication volunteers including brand ambassadors, bloggers, photographers, graphic designers, video producers, and researchers.
  • Seek pro-bono services in branding, marketing, advertising, social media and public relations.

Required Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bachelor degree required with concentration in marketing, communications or business preferred. Other majors, such as Journalism also accepted or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years of related experience in marketing or communications, ideally with a non-profit and/or human/social services provider. 
  • Management experience, including budget creation and analysis, and staff supervision.
  • Commitment to inclusive, multi-cultural programming; prior experience working with and in coalition with diverse LGBTQ and/or BIPOC communities with an understanding of intersectional oppressions.
  • Knowledge of the latest technology and communications vehicles.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic and collaborative environment.
  • Extremely organized with high attention to detail and ability to be self-directed; works well under pressure and moves quickly from task to task.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues, needs and interests of LGBTQ youth, adults, families and community, including knowledge of the spectrum of gender and nonbinary identity and issues.
  • A strong commitment to the mission and work of The LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert.
  • Fluency in a language in addition to English desired.

Watch We’re Here For You!

 

In this time of physical distance and social isolation, we desperately want to shout from the mountain tops: “We’re Here for You! You are not alone – meaningful connection is waiting for you, right around the corner @ The Center!” We live it daily to meet our mission of “helping LGBTQ people along their way.

Beloved community is the home we want every LGBTQ person to experience. So, we are launching We’re Here for You, our video storytelling project to reach our community - our virtual version of shouting from the mountain tops. Every week from October 7th through November 11th, we’ll be premiering a new video in our newsletters and on social media to let folks know how we’re wrapping our virtual arms around the people who need connection most.

Glendon is a retired clinical social worker Smith College School For Social Work) whose private practice included intensive work with children, families, couples and trauma victims. He is also a trained mediator and parent coordinator.

Since his retirement and re-location from Massachusetts to Palm Springs, he has volunteered with Family Hospice Care (being with dying patients and their loved ones), the Riverside County Fire Department and the Palm Springs Air Museum (docent).

His professional training, clinical experience, the many deaths he has experiences in his personal life, and his training with the International End of Life Doula Association have prepared him to provide the integrity and empathy necessary to bring dignity, meaning and spiritual comfort to the end of life experience.

Heslin Cinematic

I started my video production business here in Palm Springs, CA because I have found there are so many stories to tell. I have been telling visual stories from a very young age.

When I was around 12, my best friend Mike and I “borrowed” my mom’s video camera. I can remember creating a skit where Mike would stand in the living room and pretend to learn how to juggle. We were careful to make sure that the bean bags he was juggling would go out of the top of the frame. We would make him freeze in a certain position and I would cut the camera. I’d run into frame and grab the bean bag out of the shot while he was still frozen, and then we would then start the camera back up again and he would pretend to be bewildered at where the bean bag could have gone. We’d repeat this until at one point when I started the camera I tossed all the bean bags into frame as if they all came out of nowhere. When I showed it to my family, they loved it and wanted me to make more. I haven’t stopped.

It was silly kids playing with new technology, but as I went to college much later to study film I realized we weren’t so silly after all. We were playing with story structure, framing, comedic timing, etc.

Today I would still consider myself at heart a silly kid playing with new technology. I’m still constantly fascinated with new and innovative ways of telling stories. I love playing with new gear as it becomes available. And I still love the joy that comes from an audience watching something I create.
