Hey there,
Aside from bringing some familiar memes, May is here and with it comes heat, mental health awareness, and Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
Plus many of us are in the midst of coming back to a version of ourselves before the pandemic, especially when it comes to socializing with others. Navigating greetings (like hugs), reluctance and anxiety, and maybe even social exhaustion might all be things we’re going through as we try to catch up with all the missed memories from the past year. As was overhead in our Tuesday Managing Emotions During the Pandemic group, it’s all this mental arithmetic that we might be doing.
If any of this resonates with you, we’re here to remind folks of a much-loved activity here @ The Center: naps! Whether it’s a power nap, or a waking-up-mildly-panicked-because-you-don’t-know-what-time-it-is nap, we encourage you to rest your body, heart, and mind as we all figure out what life looks like.
Do you have the same love of naps that we do? Let us know
I am a nap connoisseur
I dabble in napping
I am not a napper
And moving from naps to the opposite end of the spectrum, last week we asked about your favorite activities and here’s what you let us know.
We hope through it all you’re hydrating and protecting yourself from the sun’s rays.
Director's Letter
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. When I was in school, I learned about philosopher René Descartes theory of Cartesian dualism, which argues that there are two kinds of foundation: mental and physical. For several centuries now, our Western approach to medicine has followed this idea that mind and body are separate. Although we are more aware of many kinds of treatments and therapies that are now available, our system is still set up as if the mind and body are separate entities. Think about all the different specialties doctors can choose (cardiology, urology, dermatology, gynecology, psychiatry, etc.). Our body has been divided up into parts/organs/areas as if they operate in their own sphere, but thankfully, most people now understand that everything is connected.
I learned from doing 12+ years of massage that we hold traumas and emotions in our muscle tissue, and I’ve learned from practicing psychotherapy that physical ailments impact our mental health--and our emotional wellness impacts our physical health. Several of my clients have experienced elevated pain and/or “strange” physical symptoms since March 2020. It’s all connected.
During therapy we often teach our clients the mechanisms of those connections: if we can change our thoughts, we can change our emotions, which will change our behavior, and alter our physiological responses. And it doesn’t have to change in that order. Basically, if we can change one of those things, it will shift the presence in each of those things. So during these times of the world opening-but-not-opening-and-I’m-not-sure-how-I-feel-about-any-of-it, please continue to monitor your emotional well-being and that of those around you. Continue to stretch and exercise and practice self-care. Continue to reach out for support, connection, and community if you need that. At The Center, we are here for you.
