Hey there,
Check out our special holiday edition of the newsletter this week. Whatever your holiday plans are this Thursday, we hope they're safe and full of gratitude. Plus, we invite you to revisit the American narrative of Thanksgiving with this Oglala Lakota indigenous perspective.
Letter from a Director
I’ve been feeling a lot of different emotions lately: mad that this pandemic is out of control, frustrated that our health care professionals are overworked and taken for granted with no relief in sight, grief for the loss that is happening on so many levels, selfish and sad that my wife and I can’t be with our daughter and son-in-law and the rest of our friends and family.
Right now, I’m on the other side of all of those feelings, so I’m focusing on what I CAN do. What can I do to help? Who is doing good work and how can I best support the helpers? With the holidays coming up, I'm also thinking about my year-end giving. This year I’m giving more to select organizations, and yes – The Center is one of them. I have the advantage of being able to see, on a daily basis, how our programs and services are helping people get through this difficult time. If you're able to, please join me during this giving season and give a special year-end gift by visiting our website www.thecentercv.org – the great news is that your gift will be matched dollar for dollar if you give by December 31st!

We’re sitting in gratitude for our community, as our We’re Here for You video storytelling campaign wraps up. Take a few minutes to reflect over the stories we got to highlight from our community with this compilation video above. From the Food Bank, to Behavioral Health, to showing up for more geographic places in our desert communities, and how this pandemic has affected us all, we’re building and sustaining a vibrant community that you are very much a part of. Then, let us know:

Lew in View
Lew hails from the Long Island area, with over 40 years in education: teaching, administration and principalship. Although he loved what he did retirement knocked on his door, which included many moves to many states. In one of those states - North Carolina - Lew was hit with the volunteer bug and became a Guardian ad Litem, working as an advocate for kids in the foster care system. This led to Lew and his husband (also a career educator) adopting a teenager in need of a permanent and forever home.
Eventually, Lew and his husband settled in Palm Springs. During the annual Pride celebration several years ago, Lew made his way to The Center’s booth, where once again the volunteer bug was awakened. He became a front desk volunteer in our previous location in the Sun Center and became a fixture at our current Palm Springs location. His volunteerism expanded to the Behavioral Health Clinic, special events, outreach, and most recently, to the Buddy 2 Buddy pilot program, where he’s been making calls to isolated people during the pandemic. Lew is working with the Volunteer Manager to train future Buddies so more of the community can be reached. Lew loves people, and his warm and friendly nature is infectious.
Lew’s volunteerism comes from his desire to connect with people. He has a deep heart that makes him a natural greeter, humanitarian, trainer and all-around good human. In addition to their son, Lew and his husband are the proud parents of 3 dogs.
The Center is grateful and lucky to have Lew in our corner as a volunteer.
They were here, and they were ours
Here we honor the memory of folks in our community who have passed.
Bill Brengetto (1955-1997)
Just want to honor my daddy Bill lost many years ago on the 16th of November. He is missed every day. I thank him for giving me a sense of self-worth and self-esteem and being my mentor and lover. - tlc
Jim Harrod (1939-2020)
Jim was a peach of a man: cheery and generous through tough times. Jim retired from Children's Hospital, Oakland. He and his partner Frankie moved to the valley just a couple of years ago. I miss Jim! - J.A.Tuttle
