Power of Community

By Roman

When I was trying to think about a moment from high school to recount for this blog, it was difficult. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t remember much. Maybe it was my brain trying to protect me from unpleasant memories. But then I remembered a time when I was truly involved in my community.

In 2019, when I was a senior in high school, I got involved in the 3rd Annual East Coachella Valley Pride Planning Committee. Excited was an understatement. I was over the moon to be involved in such a festival.

Being part of the planning committee truly changed my perspective on LGBTQ+ matters in the East Coachella Valley. I always thought all the LGBTQ+ events were out of reach, happening too far away for me to be a part of. When ECV Pride came around, I began to realize that I had more of a community close to home.

Being involved in the community in this new capacity was extremely rewarding. The whole process of organizing ECV Pride, even having the chance to be one of the emcees that year, overwhelmed me with emotions. I didn’t think it was possible to feel overwhelmed with positive emotions because when I was overwhelmed, it was always with unpleasant emotions.

East Coachella Valley Pride was so important to my teenage self along with others like me because it showed us the importance of having something that resonates with you in helping you get on the right path in life.

That’s the power of community, and it’s a journey we continue together. You’re invited to be part of the 9th Annual East Coachella Valley Pride Festival on Sunday, October 26, 3-8pm, in the city of Coachella. And if you’re feeling extra inspired, learn how you can get involved by joining our pride committee! Learn more.
